Visual Impact

To communicate is to express one's thoughts and emotions. Communication is human nature's survival basis, it is the way of life.

To desire a professional career that reveals narratives that display the lives and history of those within the African Diaspora through filmmaking and photography. To story tell through a lens it is important to understand each form of communication and how it has the ability to draw in an audience. A Career in visual communication means using tools to create a picture.

Media combines all forms of communication to recount relevant stories around the world. Events like the Black Lives Matter protest took place in, summer of 2020, across the United States, and sparked international outrage. Protest replayed on media outlets globally. The protest triggered after a video of George Floyd being brutally murdered under the knee of a police officer was shared online. This grotesque circumstance might not otherwise make international news and furthered a human rights debate if it were not for that video. That is the power and influence that visual communication possesses.

Visual communication is not solely used to depict stories, but it is commonly used to sell goods. Small and big businesses alike use graphics, photos, and symbols to market their products. It isn't just about marketable images, but a logo that essentially becomes a business' identity.

In 2020 COVID-19 plagued the world. As the world was forced to pause businesses scrambled to stay connected, and the Zoom logo became far more familiar. The logo has a blue background and a camera outlined white. Blue typically represents stability and reliability, a space to fill businesses' needs.

A store that a person can walk into with no list then leaves with everything they feel they need and more. There is a store whose identity and logo reflect that no matter what they'll be spot on. Target's logo displays one large red circle and a smaller red circle inside of it. Between the red circles, there is white space which views as white circles. Target's logo is a target, like in an archery field. The red creates a moment of stillness as your eyes go straight to the bullseye. Red is viewed as a dominant and striking color which means it attracts people to look in its direction.

Another logo that primarily started out as a visual social network mobile app can be recognized globally. Instagram can be found on just about anyone's phone, and if not, the logo can at least be recognized. The logo started out as an animated graphic of a camera and has since been updated. The logo still shows the framework of a camera but in a more simplistic way. The camera is created in line work with the color white. It takes the shape of a square and the rest of the area is filled with warm colors to invite you into the picture-perfect, or not so perfect, moments of other people's lives.

Visual communication has the capability to captivate one in an instant. It can be portrayed through photography, cinematography, graphics, symbols...etc. Media in society transitioned accompanying all other forms of communication with visual communication. Color, body movements, and facial expressions all play a role.

Child Migrant Detention Centers and Family Separation does not reflect Democracy.

Families at the U.S-Mexican Border attempting to cross over into the U.S for a better life are being met with strict resistance. Once crossing over if caught by the U.S government are then detained and oftentimes children are being separated from their parents. Many of these children are only following their parents' leads and doing what they are told. These children do not understand the full ramifications of their parents’ decision. Some of the children crossing the border are being sent alone to escape poverty, drugs, crime, and an overall lack of resources.  The United States is known for enforcing strict immigration policies and has always addressed illegal immigration as an issue that needs to be controlled. The numbers are skyrocketing, but the U.S has failed to find a solution that safely protects these children. News outlets have shown footage of these children sleeping in cages with only foil blankets as coverings. The detention centers are run similar to prisons, ...
